Done is Better Than Perfect

Have you ever felt like you’re drowning in stuff? Like there’s too much clutter in your life, and you don’t even know where to start? If so, you’re not alone! Decluttering is a freeing experience but can also be overwhelming and challenging.

Here are seven helpful tips to know before you start your decluttering journey :

1. You don’t have to do it all at once.

Often we don’t even start decluttering because we think once we start, we have to finish…by finish, I mean the whole house in one go! To do this, we wait until we have the time, the finances, the energy and all the other ducks in a row before we begin…and so we keep putting it off. Sometimes the most challenging part of decluttering is just deciding to do it! What would it look like if today you took the courageous first step? Don’t put pressure on yourself to declutter everything at once. Start with 15-30 mins in one small space, and know that just starting is already a win!

2. It can be tiring, so be kind to yourself.

Decluttering can be physically and mentally tiring and bring up different emotions, so don’t be surprised if you feel tired after a decluttering session. Take breaks, drink water, and listen to your body. If you need to take a nap or go for a walk, do it! Remember, small steps are big wins!

3. Declutter, Declutter Declutter.

Before organising your things and buying all the storage containers you think you’ll need, start by decluttering the stuff you already have. Often, once you’ve done that, there’s much less to organise, saving you time and money!

4. It takes longer than you think.

Sometimes we think decluttering and organising is a quick process, but trust me, it takes time. It’s a journey not a sprint.  Sure, there may be times when you put that timer on and go for it, but don’t expect it to be done in a weekend or even a week. Give yourself time and celebrate the small wins along the way.

5. It’s so freeing to let go of stuff that no longer serves you or makes you smile.

One of the most amazing things about decluttering and organising your space is the freedom of letting go of things that no longer serve you. It’s like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders! So, let go of that dress you haven’t worn in years or that old CD collection. You’ll be surprised at how good it can feel!

6. Helpful Habits can make all the difference.

We all have habits that don’t serve us, but creating helpful practices can make all the difference in decluttering and organising. Spend some time getting curious about the things you do that help you step towards your dream of a decluttered and organised home and those that perhaps are holding you back. Then take the courageous step to make some changes. You’ll be so glad you did!

7. You don’t have to do it alone.

Decluttering can sometimes feel overwhelming, so don’t feel you must do it alone. Enlist the help of a friend, family member, or declutter coach to keep you motivated and on track. It helps to have someone to be alongside you when you’re making difficult decisions and when you have the wins!

So embrace the process, stay curious and know that every small step counts towards your dream of enjoying the freedom of letting go of excess stuff.
